bell hooks (1952–2021) was the pen name of Gloria Jean Watkins, an American writer and feminist theorist. She took the name from her great-grandmother and kept it in lower case so that attention stayed on the work rather than on its author.
Across some forty books she read race, class, and gender as one system rather than three subjects, and wrote for readers outside the academy as much as inside it. Her work on masculinity argues that patriarchy costs men their emotional lives, and that they have a stake in ending it.
